Mikoshi, portable shrine, of Yagisawa Tsushima Shrine starts moving at 1:00 pm on Sunday, July 9th.

It will arrive at Tanashi Jinja around 1:30 pm. Honzya Tennosai then starts soon in front of Tsushima Shrine within the premise of Tanashi Jinja.

Although only authorized people can attend the ritual, but you are allowed to watch it nearby. After the ritual, Mikoshi will parade through the streets of Yagisawa, then Kankosai will be held near the Yagisawa Underpass around 5:00 pm.

<What is Mikoshi?>

Mikoshi is a vehicle of a god who goes out of his/her shrine. Japanese gods aren’t always reside in their shrines. Once a year at a festival, gods ride on Mikoshi to go out and absorb all the disasters and Kegare to purify them. Once finished, they go back to their respective shrines.

 

The festival on July 9th is that of Yagisawa Tsuhima Shrine, and not of Tanashi Jinja. The festival of Tanashi Jinja will be held on October 14th and 15th.
